Edith Stout joined the Vassar Chemistry Department as Curator of Instrumentation in 1984, the same year she obtained her A.B. in biochemistry from Vassar. Upon completion of her M.A. in chemistry at Vassar in 1990, she expanded her responsibilities to include the teaching of advanced laboratories with a focus on the identification of organic compounds.

Ms. Stout’s research interests are in the field of archeochemistry where she concentrates on the identification and analysis of tars, pitches, and fossil resins, including amber.

In collaboration with Curt. W. Beck, the late Prof. Emeritus of Chemistry at Vassar, her work has been published in numerous international journals, including Nature, and is routinely presented at international symposia.

She is Director of the Amber Research Laboratory at Vassar.
